Smart Greenhouse & Precision Irrigation Concepts: The Future of Controlled-Environment Nurseries
By Md. Mamunur Reza (Assistant Program Director, APCU-BADC PARTNER & PhD Fellow)
In commercial vegetable production, the quality of transplants raised in the nursery phase plays a decisive role in field establishment, early vigor, and eventual marketable yield. As outlined in our published 2025 Springer Nature book chapter Seed Germination and Seedling Development in Vegetable Crops (co-authored by Ripon Kumar Sikder, Ashok Kumar Biswas, Md. Asif Iqbal & Md. Mamunur Reza in Growth Regulation and Quality Improvement of Vegetable Crops, pp. 15–50, Springer, Singapore) and our 2023 BARC Training of Trainers (ToT) manual IoT Based Auto Irrigation System for Safe Horticultural Crop Production, transitioning from manual or fixed-timer watering to sensor-informed irrigation is one of the most promising frontiers in modern horticulture.
1. The Conceptual Shift: From Fixed Timers to Demand-Driven Irrigation
Conventional nurseries often rely on calendar schedules or visual inspection to irrigate seedling trays and pots. However, plant water demand fluctuates dynamically with solar radiation, ambient temperature, relative humidity, and canopy growth stage. Over-watering can leach essential nutrients and create hypoxic root zones conducive to damping-off pathogens, whereas under-watering induces transient water stress.
2. Core Pillars of Smart Nursery Management
The conceptual framework behind modern smart fertigation systems — such as the commercial hardware and cloud tools we develop through SensPanel.com and FARM-HUB — rests on three general principles:
- Real-Time Microclimate & Root-Zone Sensing: Monitoring temperature, relative humidity, Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD), and substrate moisture to understand real-time crop demand.
- Balanced Nutrient Delivery (EC & pH): Supplying macro- and micronutrients at appropriate electrical conductivity and pH ranges tailored to seedling developmental stages.
- Automated Actuation & Cloud Alerts: Using smart solenoid controllers and mobile dashboards so growers and nursery managers can maintain consistent growing conditions with higher water and fertilizer use efficiency.
