By Md. Mamunur Reza (Assistant Program Director, APCU-BADC PARTNER & PhD Fellow)
On December 22–23, 2021, the Computer and GIS Unit of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC)—the apex coordinating body of Bangladesh’s National Agricultural Research System (NARS)—organized a national training course titled “IoT Based Precision Agriculture for Sustainable Production.” I was invited as a key Trainer and Resource Speaker to present practical IoT hardware/software architectures and precision farming deployments.
Key Technical Topics Covered at BARC
- IoT Sensor Networks in Agriculture: Deploying industrial-grade RS485/Modbus soil moisture, EC, pH, NPK, solar radiation, and microclimate sensors across field and greenhouse environments.
- Edge-to-Cloud Telemetry & Actuation: Designing reliable microcontroller gateways capable of operating autonomously during rural connectivity drops while syncing time-series telemetry to cloud dashboards.
- Resource Efficiency & Sustainability: Quantifying water, fertilizer, and labor savings achieved through closed-loop sensor-actuated irrigation in Bangladesh.
