Polyhouse, Locally-Adapted Greenhouse & Drip Irrigation Engineering: Field Implementation and Grower Training
By Md. Mamunur Reza (Assistant Program Director, APCU-BADC PARTNER & PhD Fellow)
Event Focus: Polyhouse, Locally-Adapted Greenhouse & Drip Irrigation Technology Implementation and Training
Imported temperate-zone greenhouses often fail under Bangladesh’s intense solar radiation, monsoon wind loads, and high ambient humidity—while remaining financially out of reach for domestic growers. To bridge this gap, I led the structural adaptation, construction, and field validation of locally-engineered greenhouses and naturally ventilated polyhouses paired with precision drip fertigation networks.
Key Engineering & Extension Outcomes
- Tropical Microclimate Optimization: Engineered ridge vents and insect-screen sidewalls to maximize passive convective cooling without prohibitive electricity costs.
- Water-Use Efficiency via Drip Fertigation: Replaced flood irrigation with pressure-compensated drip lines and Venturi injectors, cutting water consumption by over 60% while preventing foliar fungal pathogens.
- Practical Grower Empowerment: Trained hundreds of farmers, nursery operators, and departmental staff on EC/pH calibration, pruning, and integrated pest management under cover.
